Virtual Bugling Merit Badge

What: Scouts who are doing the requirements for the Bugling merit badge will learn 10 different bugle calls. They will also learn to care for a bugle and serve as troop bugler for at least 3 months.

Participants will be asked to prepare and practice bugle calls and be ready to perform during class.

All requirements except 2(B) will be completed during this class.

Meet your CounselorPatrick McDonald, is an Eagle Scout from Troop 689 in Seaford New York. Pat proudly served as Troop Bugler from 2001-2003 and Camp Three Point Bugler from 2003-2008. He is currently an attorney with Roberts, Carrol, Feldestein and Peirce in Providence, RI. Unfortunately, he is no longer allowed to play the bugle at work. Pat graduated from Hofstra with a degree in Latin and Classics and Suffolk Law with a Juris Doctor degree. He served on Yawgoog staff for nine seasons where he still volunteers his time. Currently, Pat serves as the Chairman of the Yawgoog Alumni Association.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members.

HOW:  This Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 12 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements. Scouts must use a device with video to access this class.

Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over three sessions:

May 26, 2020 5:00PM-6:00PM

May 28, 2020 5:00PM-7:00PM

May 29, 2020 5:00PM-7:00PM

Scouts must attend all 3 sessions to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email the day of scheduled class. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.

PREREQUISITES:  Scouts participating in this badge must Serve as a Bugler in their Troop for three months

Suggested supplies/prep-work for students:

Scouts may use a bugle, trumpet or cornet to meet the requirements. Exceptions will be made for other brass instruments. If you plan on using a different brass instrument, please email ncbsavirtual@scouting.org for exceptions.
