Virtual Scouting Heritage Merit Badge

What: Learn all about how Scouting today came to be! We will discuss the important individuals who founded the Scouting Program in the United States, and how they each developed important elements of the Scouting program. We will explore local history of Scouting in our area, see some historical Scouting memorabilia, and you will have the opportunity to speak with veteran Scouters and ask them about their experiences growing up in Scouting. With over a hundred years of history, you will be surprised to learn what has changed, and what traditions we still share with Scouters who founded the Boy Scouts of America back in 1910!

Meet your Counselor - Your merit badge counselor for Scouting Heritage didn’t join Scouting until he was almost 15 years old, but that didn’t stop him. He made Eagle in less than 3 years.  He has been involved in Scouting for more than 40 years. During that time he has attended every National Jamboree since 1989. He has attended NOACs, Florida SeaBase, The Summit and Philmont several times. He currently serves the Narragansett Council on the Golf Committee, the NESA committee, the Executive Board and as the Council International Representative. He has been collecting Scout memorabilia for over 40 years and is an active member of ISCA (International Scouting Collectors Association). Please join me in welcoming Manny Bagaco.

WHO: Open to all Scouts BSA members.

HOW:  This Merit Badge will be taught in a virtual classroom. The class has a capacity of 20 Scouts. Small classroom size provides all students with the opportunity to share and interact with the counselors and other Scouts. Scouts should be prepared to be challenged and to join the conversation! Participants who do not engage with the class may not receive credit for the badge. Scouts must be prompt for all badge sessions. Late participants may not receive credit for all requirements. Scouts must use a device with video to access this class.

Before beginning work on any merit badge, scouts are to have a discussion with their unit leader regarding the specific badge and counselor.

WHEN: This class will be held virtually over two sessions:

May 12, 2020 3:00PM-5:00PM

May 19, 2020 3:00PM-5:00PM

Scouts must attend both sessions to complete the offered requirements.

After registering, Scouts will receive a link and login information via email the day of scheduled class. Scouts will also receive instructor details that can be used to connect to the counselor on Scoutbook. This assures that completed requirements are easily recorded.

PREREQUISITES:  We will be discussing local Scouting history to cover certain requirements, so this class will only be open to Narragansett Council Scouts.

Basic knowledge of the history of Scouting (refer to the handbook, or online research beforehand to familiarize yourself with the basics).

Requirements completed in class:

Requirements completed as homework: There will be written reports that will have to be submitted as homework between sessions 1 & 2.

Suggested supplies/prep-work for students: You will be asked to share your collection of Scouting patches or other Scouting memorabilia. You won’t need this for session 1, but start thinking about what you have to share.
